The relevance of currency risk in the EMU
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate how the elimination of intra-European exchange risk may affect international financial markets using a conditional version of the International CAPM. We estimate the EMU and non-EMU components of aggregate currency risk and document significant exposures to both. The premium for EMU risk is positive and associated with exposure to the French, Italian and Spanish currencies. The premium for non-EMU risk is consistently negative and accounts for most of the aggregate currency premiums. In the 1990s, exposures to EMU risk declined significantly while exposures to non-EMU risk increased. Hence the adoption of the Euro is unlikely to have a large impact on aggregate currency risk premiums. © 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. JEL classification: C32; F30; G12

New Currency, New Constraints? the Euro and Government-financial Market Relations
How does the advent of EMU affect the nature of financial market-government relations? I begin by reviewing the argument that developed-nation governments retain room to move in the face of financial globalization. I then consider the recent implications of EMU for this argument. Membership in EMU restricts governments fiscal and monetary policymaking autonomy, but it also may change their trea...

Optimum currency area theory says that trade patterns and cyclical correlations are important criteria for whether a country should join a monetary area such as EMU. But these criteria are endogenous. Recent econometric estimates suggest that currency unions have far greater effects on trade patterns than previously believed. Since currency unions are good for trade, and trade is good for growt...

Recent econometric estimates suggest that currency unions have far greater effects on trade patterns than previously believed. Since currency unions are good for trade, and trade is good for growth, that is one major argument in favor of EMU. If there were evidence that the boost to trade within EMU was likely to come in part at the expense of trade with outsiders, that would imply something st...
متن کاملEurope's Gamble
AFTER THREE DECADES, the quest for European monetary unification may well bear fruit on January 1, 1999. On that date the European Union (EU) plans to introduce a common currency, the euro, in member states that satisfy specified macroeconomic convergence criteria. If the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) project is launched on time and with the maximum membership of eleven countries that curre...
متن کاملHow Much Does the EMU Benefit Trade?
The economic benefits of sharing a currency like the euro continue to be debated. In theory, countries that use the same currency face lower trade costs and exchange rate risk and are able to compare prices across borders more easily. These advantages should help increase trade among the economies involved. New estimates suggest that this has been the case in Europe, though perhaps to a lesser ...
